Salon des Jeunes is an exhibition organised by Schoonvolk!, the youth crew of the Museum of Fine Arts in Ghent . Schoonvolk! brings back the salon culture that was once tradition in MSK. Schoonvolk! challenged young artists to take inspiration from works in the MSK collection that were created by masters such as Ensor, Van Rysselberghe and Van Dyck, when they themselves were young.

For this exhibition Janne Gistelinck looked at the painting ‘Jupiter and Antiope’ from Anthony Van Dyck. The result is a tapestry called ‘The war within you, the war within me.’ and is a reaction to the gender roles that are visible in the original painting by Van Dyck. The new tapestry transforms the imagery of Jupiter taking advantage of the sleeping Antiope from the original painting and focuses on the internal struggles that come when female bodies are used in the war for power.

About the exhibition

For her first solo exhibition, Janne Gistelinck brings together several striking textile artworks at cc De Schakel. Starting from the Jacquard weaving technique, Gistelinck experiments with digital imagery of the human body and its anatomy, transforming them into an alienating, anonymous landscape. This landscape never stands still; it exists in a state of constant mutation. The body we know so intimately suddenly becomes a terra incognita—deceptively recognizable, like a map without a sea. Viewers are invited to interact and reflect upon this ambiguous, semi-human landscape.

About the curator

Zuzanna Rachowska is an independent curator, writer, and researcher based in Brussels. Alongside her master's degree in sociology and philosophy, she earned a postgraduate degree in curatorial studies from KASK in June 2020. Since 2019, she has co-curated various group exhibitions, including Condition Report at the Vandenhove Centre in Ghent, From Scratch to Scratch as part of the Jan van Eyck year, and The Garden is Older Than The Field in Bulskampveld landscape park. In October 2020, she served as solo curator for Theatrum Opticum Revived, an exhibition of video art installations by Eric de Kuyper from the M HKA collection.
